Some homecleaning tips

August 16, 2010

Acids:Act quickly so that acid cannot damage the cloth. Sprinkle the stain with baking soda, dampen with water and allow to stand till bubbling stops. Rinse well in warm water. Alternatively, hold the dampened stain over an open bottle of household ammonia so that the fumes can neutralize the acid. Rinse well.

Adhesive Tape:Sponge or soak the dry fabric stain with a suitable laundry pre-soak (spot stain remover) or in a grease solvent or kerosene. Kerosene will make the cloth oily, so if used, must be followed by washing in warm soapy water.

Alcohol:Always treat these as soon as possible. Often stains are almost colourless at first, but turn brown on standing, washing and ironing. Fresh stains can be removed by sponging several times with warm water. If there is any mark left, pour glycerine on the dampened stain, rub lightly between the hands and leave for half an hour. Rinse in warm water.

More stubborn stains may be sponged on dry fabric with equal quantities of methylated spirits (wood alcohol) and ammonia (test on colours first) or laundry pre-soak (spot stain remover). Rinse well in warm water. If any stain is left on white material, a laundry bleach may be used. Choose and use your bleach according to instructions given earlier.

Alkali’s:such as washing soda and ammonia, or cuticle remover, may destroy colour and rot material. Rinse at once in equal quantities of vinegar and water. Rinse well in warm water. If colour has been affected this cannot be corrected.

Ball-Point Ink:See under Ink for stain removal suggestions

Baby Oil:Rub some dishwash liquid into the stain, leave for 10-15 minutes, then hot wash (60-65°C) using your normal laundry detergent. If any stain remains, repeat the process. For unwashable fabrics or articles, see under Butter.

Bleach:Treat immediately in copious amounts of cold water. For chlorine bleach, add 1 Tbsp. vinegar in each 600 mls water. If the colour has been removed by the bleach, it cannot readily be restored, but try holding in fumes from an open bottle of ammonia.

Blood:If fresh, sponge with cool salted water (1tsp : 600 ml water) and rinse with clear water.
Should stain persist, soak in a diaper wash/sanitiser from the supermarket that contains sodium percarbonate - read the diaper wash/sanitiser label for the chemical make-up of the product (may state sodium carbonate peroxohydrate or oxygenated bleach). Sodium percarbonate is derived from a manufacturing process of concentrated solutions of sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide (sodium carbonate peroxohydrate) therefore you could try using the hydrogen peroxide suggestion first. Or you can try any of the following suggestions, and they are in no particular order… Dilute hydrogen peroxide (1 part : 9 parts water).

Blue: Rinse fresh marks in cold water. Soak any more difficult stains in a solution 1 Tbsp. vinegar in 1200 ml of warm water. Wash as usual.

Boot Polish :Sponge with a laundry pre-soak (spot stain remover) or with dry cleaning fluid.

Butter, Cream & Fatty Stains
Wash in warm sudsy water if a washable fabric. If not, sponge dry fabric with a grease solvent, e.g. laundry pre-soak (spot stain remover) or dry cleaning fluid.

Common household salt can be used to “Set Dyes” at a rate of quarter to half a cup per wash tub load. Leave to soak half an hour, rinse, then hang to dry. Salt is a common additive to Laundry Powder formulations. Among it’s many uses, salt minimises the risk of “running dyes” when laundering garments.

Egg:Scrape away as much as possible. Sponge with lukewarm water. Never use hot water, as heat hardens the stain. If this does not succeed, spread the stain with a paste of cream of tartar and water, adding a crushed aspirin to the paste. Leave for 20 - 30 minutes. Rinse well in warm water. OR use a diaper wash/sanitiser container sodium percarbonate.

Fruit Juices & Berries: Fresh stains are easy to remove, but once dry, they are very obstinate. Treat with cool water first and follow up, if necessary, by soaking in a chlorinated laundry bleach or a diaper wash/sanitiser container sodium percarbonate. Rinse.

White cottons and linens may be stretched over a basin and boiling water poured through from a height. Any remaining stain may be removed with chlorinated laundry bleach.

Coloured fabrics or washable silk, etc., may be soaked in a diaper wash/sanitiser container sodium percarbonate or a warm borax solution (1 Tbsp. : 1 c water), or covered with a paste of cream of tartar and warm water. Leave half and hour or until stain goes, then rinse well.

For persistent stains apply equal quantities of methylated spirits (wood alcohol) and ammonia. Rinse well after treatment. This method is safe for all fabrics, except triacetate (e.g. Tricel). Dilute mixture with an equal quantity of water for fabrics with fugitive dyes. Old stains may be softened in glycerine before treatment. Damp stain, apply glycerine, leave 1 - 2 hours, then add a few drops of vinegar, leave 5 - 10 minutes and rinse well.

Ice Cream, Milk & Cream
For washable materials, first sponge with lukewarm water, then wash as usual. If the material is not washable, sponge with dry cleaning fluid then with cold water.

Indelible Pencil
Do not use water as this spreads the stain. Sponge over a pad of soft cloth, using equal quantities of methylated spirits (wood alcohol) and household ammonia (test coloured fabrics first). Should the colours run, try methylated spirits (wood alcohol) alone. Rinse or sponge with warm water.

Very light scorch marks can often be removed by immediate washing with your usual laundry product, followed by a day in the sun. Alternatively, sponge with 1 Tbsp. borax in 1 c warm water.

Light scorch marks on white materials can be treated with hydrogen peroxide. Dampen a scrap of white cotton cloth with hydrogen peroxide and lay it on the mark. Cover with a clean dry cloth, then press with a medium warm iron. If the peroxide soaks through the top cloth, move to a dry position. Repeat the treatment until the stain is removed. Rinse well in warm water.

Light scorch marks on any fabric (test colours first) may be treated by sponging with diluted hydrogen peroxide to which a few drops of ammonia have been added. Rinse well in warm water. (Instructions for dilution under directions for using bleaches).

Shoe Cleaners
Scrape off any excess with a dull knife. Shoe creams can frequently be removed from washable materials by washing with your usual laundry product.

If this is not successful, treat washable fabrics with glycerine. Pour on to the stain, rub lightly between the hands, leave for half an hour, then wash or rinse in warm water.

On unwashable fabrics or for very stubborn marks, sponge with equal quantities of methylated spirits (wood alcohol) and household ammonia. (Test on coloured fabrics first). Then sponge with warm water.

Silly Putty
Scrape off the excess with a blunt knife, then apply a warm to hot solution made up of 1 part D’limonene, 1 part dishwash liquid, 10 parts water (read our notes on each product at this link). Massage into the putty, and use absorbent towelling to absorb the “gunk”. You may need to repeat this. Finally rinse with warm water and let dry naturally.
Or Crayola recommend that you Scrape the excess Silly Putty with a dull knife or metal spoon. Spray with WD-40® (car part lubricant) and let stand a few minutes. Again scrape excess Silly Putty with knife or spoon, and re-spray with WD-40®. Wipe stain with cotton balls. If any stain remains, saturate a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol, blot the stain and rinse. Wipe any remaining residue or remaining stain with a damp sponge or cloth moistened with liquid dishwashing detergent.

Soft Drinks
Pre-treat dry fabric with a laundry pre-soak (spot stain remover) prior to washing with a quality laundry product in the usual way. Alternative treatment: sponge with equal quantities of methylated spirits (wood alcohol) and water. Old or obstinate stains may be softened in glycerine before treatment as above.

Soot & Smoke
First treat with absorbent powder, then wash. For unwashable articles sponge with dry cleaning fluid or other grease solvent, followed by airing to remove smell of smoke.

For carpets, mix solvent to a paste with cornflour, talcum or french chalk. Apply thickly - leave to dry, then brush or vacuum off. Repeat if necessary. Use absorbent powder only on rubber backed carpeting. Or use a spray-on dry cleaner.

Soy Sauce
Dry the soya sauce-stained area. Mix together 3 parts dishwash liquid with 1 part of a D’Limonene based product (read our notes on each product at this link). Soak the stained area in this solution for 10-15 minutes. After the soak time, rinse in water as hot as is suitable for the fabric, then wash as usual, but preferrably with a Laundry Liquid. This treatment may require repeating.

Tar & Asphalt
Scrape away as much as possible with a dull knife. Sponge with Jeyes fluid and water (1 part Jeyes to 3 of water) or pre-treat with a laundry pre-soak (spot stain remover) then wash with a quality laundry product, rinse in warm water.

If this is not successful on washable materials, rub Vaseline or lard into the stain. Leave for half an hour, then wash in hot soapy water.

For unwashable materials the stain will be very difficult. Sponge repeatedly with dry cleaning fluid. If the mark still persists, rub with Vaseline, leave for half an hour, then dip in dry cleaning fluid. If possible, finish by sponging with a solution made from a good quality laundry liquid, starting well to the outside of the stain.

Tarnish
Metallic stains from belts, jewellery, etc., sometimes stain clothes. Sponge with vinegar, lemon juice or 10% solution acetic acid (check synthetics first).

For tarnished metallic fabrics, e.g. lame, if practicable, boil in salt water (2 Tbsp. to 600 ml). Not suitable for plastics. Otherwise, sponge with methylated spirits (wood alcohol) or dry cleaning fluid.

Tobacco
For stubborn tobacco stains, first try pouring glycerine over the stain. Rub lightly between the hands, or pre-treat the dry fabric with a laundry pre-soak (spot stain remover), leave for half an hour then wash in the usual way. If this is not successful, use sodium thiosulphate as directed for iodine stains.

Tomato Juice, Relish or Chutney
Sponge thoroughly with cold water first. Pour glycerine over, rub lightly between the hands and leave for half an hour. Or, pre-treat the dry fabric with a laundry pre-soak (spot stain remover), leave for half an hour then wash in the usual way. Rinse in warm water. Remove any remaining stain with a chlorinated laundry bleach or a diaper wash/sanitiser container sodium percarbonate, as directed.

Twink (Whiteout) (Liquid Paper) (Liquid Correction Fluid)
Purchase some Spray & Wipe from your supermarket, and use concentrated on the stain. Most Spray & Wipe formula’s contain a solvent which will dissolve the liquid paper. OR Try a little gasoline on the stain, with some good absorbent paper or old cloth behind it. Then use some dishwash liquid or a good quality laundry liquid to wash out the gasoline. OR Purchase some xylene, or toluene, these are some of the solvents used in making the stuff. Use as if using the gasoline. These are stocked by gasoline companies and you may be able to request a small sample. Always test an inconspicuous piece of material before proceeding.

Soap Nut Liquids and Powders

August 9, 2010

Soap Nut Liquids and Powders:

Let’s address these first, given that they are the most similar to what we are all accustomed to using. The variables here (aside from amounts to use) are primarily the concentration of the liquid, and/or the fineness and potency of the powder. If you are making your own liquid then the potency of saponin in the liquid will vary depending upon how you make it. You will simply have to experiment. Be certain to strain your own liquid extremely well, to avoid clogging anything (a coffee filter straining would be a good idea).

If you are using powder poured directly in with your laundry, you want it to be as fine as you can possibly get it (dust like is preferred). You may not get an adequate release of saponin for a laundry load from a course grind and a short wash cycle. In this scenario it is best to use a fine powder, or put it in a wash bag or similar carrier for multiple loads, but be sure to pre-soak it first. This will allow the course ground soap nuts time to become well saturated. Approximately a half-ounce of very, very fine, quality soap nut powder (added directly in with your laundry) will obviously wash only one load. The powder will be flushed out during the rinse and then out the drain. A course grind in a tightly tied wash bag will be fine for multiple loads. If you are adding salts, water softeners or any other cleaning boosters, that’s totally fine (part of the fun during experimentation, too). Since ground soap nuts do not entirely dissolve as commercial detergents do, it is not recommended to use compartments at all. Depending on how your machine functions, the powder may not receive a sufficient water supply, plus it could cause clogging.

If you are using a highly concentrated soap nuts liquid, dilute it to the amount of solution your machine is designed to use (typically this is a couple ounces of liquid). Don’t rack your brain trying to be exact. Hence, if the soap nut concentrate suggests one teaspoon per load, simply mix the one teaspoon with water until you’ve reached the desired amount of solution you intend to use. If you are planning to do many loads feel free to make up enough solution in advance. High quality concentrates may be diluted without loss of shelf life.

Most soap nut liquids are much like any other detergent as far as the suggested amount per load, however there are concentrated soap nut extracts that are literally “off-the chart”. This is only common sense again: A soap nut formulator is by nature following a “greener path”. It is only logical for such companies to strive to minimize the carbon footprint of their formulas. That is the truly green thing to do.

(As an aside, I feel that such companies should be commended for walking their talk. That truly green path is certainly not the simple and easy one with the least resistance. Many obstacles are typically found. Innovation is the antithesis of “going with the flow.”)

No machine is designed to use such highly concentrated detergents, hence if you are using the detergent compartment(s), simply dilute it as described above. Very, very simple, right? With front loaders you will usually use the compartments. With top loaders you can just pour the concentrated extract directly into the water basin as it fills so prior dilution is not required.

Isn’t this easy? Plain old common sense again, right? There is no rocket science here. Good results are what we are striving for. It may take a couple loads to dial in the best results, but you will soon just “know” what to do. If you have a pre-wash and a main wash cycle, simply use as your owner’s manual suggests.

Skipping soda may help with bone strength

August 6, 2010

Want strong bones? Eat foods high in calcium and vitamin D, get plenty of exercise and maybe steer clear of soda.

In recent decades, as soda consumption has displaced consumption of other drinks — particularly milk — studies have consistently linked soda consumption with weaker bones. Now, scientists are trying to figure out how and why.

One theory is that a component in cola might cause bone to deteriorate; another is that people who drink soda simply drink (and eat) fewer nutritious foods. Free-phosphate detergent.

Sodium metasilicate pentahydrate in house cleaning

August 5, 2010

P78u—safe non-toxic washing powder with no phosphorus, nitrogen or aluminum: it uses long-chain fatty alcohol made from natural animal or vegetable oil, fatty acid derivatives or saponin as a surfactant. At the same time, it uses sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium metasilicate pentahydrate, modified starch and sodium sulfate as additives. This product is examined by relevant departments to be a non-toxic, safe detergent with negative mutation.

P27a—speed ink removal lotion: made by certain substances mixing with water and emulsifying including carboxymethyl cellulose, leveling agent, sodium metasilicate pentahydrate, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, AEO-3, SP-80, ethyl acetate, propylene glycol methyl ether, alcohol and kerosene. It has a lot of advantages: non-toxic; non-corrosive; non-polluting; non-burning; powerful detergency; good fluidity and stability; no metamorphism; good security; quick cleaning speed, etc. It can be widely used in the removal of oil on various items, especially for scrubbing printing machines, rollers and ink on the tape.

Magnesium rod is often seen in electric water heater. Due to lack of the knowledge about magnesium rods, it is extremely difficult to clean, let alone the maintenance. Here is a formula which makes use of sodium metasilicate pentahydrate for users.

Take 20% sodium alkyl aryl sulfonate, tetrasodium EDTA (dihydrate) 12%, 25% sodium carbonate, sodium dihydrogen phosphate (monohydrate) 10%, and sodium metasilicate (pentahydrate) 33% to mix, modulate into mixture, and then clean magnesium rod with the mixture.

Clean hat with sodium metasilicate pentahydrate

July 30, 2010

Hat, in special the light one, the easiest cleaning procedure is to use thoroughly clean dried up wood, pumice powder, wheat bran or talcum grain along with other arrangements. In addition, it could first be felt hat soaked with gasoline, and then clean thoroughly clean brush, then use chalk and sodium dithionite solution (1000 ml of h2o by introducing 10 gr of sodium dithionite) modulation into a paste, then wipe this stupid you will find stains inside the hat place, and finally dried up it. After dried up it you must use a thoroughly clean dried up brush, metal out it with iron. if you’d like whiten it, you can actually clean by introducing ahandful of drops of ammonia, hydrogen peroxide solution

Comparison of phosphate and phosphate-free detergent additives

July 28, 2010

For several years, sodium tripolyphosphate happen to be an fundamental detergent additive while in the area of artificial detergent. it may increase the washing efficiency of surfactants, dispersion, emulsification, dirt compatibilization, chelation of very difficult lime scale and magnesium ions, and create soluble sophisticated substance to stop dirt redeposition, buffer alkalinity to increase the rewashing function.

At the identical time, phosphorus also contributes to drinking water eutrophication, the proliferation of algae and phytoplankton and sea red-colored tide. it really is the culprit accountable for drinking watertop quality deterioration of rivers and lakes.

The shortcomings of phosphorus-containing detergent make consumers even more inclined to non-phosphorus detergent. you can get several non-phosphorus detergent additives, 4A zeolite, sodium metasilicate, crystalline layered sodium disilicate and modified sodium disilicate (MDS), etc.

Property comparisons of those additives are as follows:

  ① softened drinking water property:

name MDS STPP sodium metasilicate 4A zeolite

  35℃ 20min CaCO3 mg/g(product) 352.93 347.60 164 301.40

  35℃ 20min MgCO3 mg/g(product) 402.50 251.30 210 77

  ②water solubility:

name MDS Sodium metasilicate layered disilicate 4Azeolite STPP

  20℃ solubility ≥80 50 insoluble insoluble 17

  ③decontamination index:

name MDS STPP 4A zeolite Standard powder

  Decontamination index 1.46 1.50 1.31 1.00

Comparing these parameters above, it is apparent that MDS is even more spectacular versus the other phosphorus-free additives. Therefore, MDS can be a new detergent additive in detergent industry.

The production technology of Anhydrous Sodium metasilicate

July 27, 2010

sodium metasilicate Anhydrous is light or lumination grey grain. Its molecular formulation is Na2SiO3(Na2O.SiO2).

  Production technology:

First one: steady granulation. Transform the remedy of sodium metasilicate into steady granules of particular sizing as a result of granulation crystal devices. The level of quality indicators can meet up with theprinciples of HG/T2568-94. The supplement is high-grade spherical granule with substantial whiteness and decent fluidity. This technique is appropriate for substantial production, however the technological innovation is just not effortless to master.

Second one: Crystal dehydration or mom liquor blood flow method. introducing seed crystal or mom liquor on the remedy of sodium metasilicate, then dried up and sieve it dynamically soon after centrifugal dewatering to acquire granular or powdered product. it can be complicated because of this technique for being utilized to substantial production. However, its look and fluidity is excellent. In addition, its level of quality indicators can meet up with the principles of HG/T2568-94 as well.

Third one: Crushed crystal method. Concentrate the remedy of sodium metasilicate to particular concentration, then include seed crystal and additive to prompt the remedy to crystallize into stable block. When allfree of charge h2o transforms into crystal water, the supplement may be obtained soon after stable smash. This technique demands much less investment, but it may lead to considerable destruction to crystal structure, along with the requests for conditions and manage needs are strict. introducing in the substantial labour intensity, very low whiteness and effortless deliquescence, bodily and chemical substanceindicators typically cannot achieve the needs of HG/T2568-94.

Eco-powders’ misleading claims in wash

July 23, 2010

A consumer group has given warning of “greenwashing” after tests on laundry powders marketed as eco-friendly found one to be misleading and potentially dangerous.

Consumer New Zealand said its investigation came amid a rise in the use of broad or poorly defined green claims which were likely to be misunderstood by consumers.

The powder also contained a mineral salt - sodium metasilicate - which if swallowed could cause severe burns to the throat, nose or windpipe.

Consumer NZ cited cases of children who had swallowed dishwasher detergent containing the ingredient. Some suffered burns so severe they needed operations.

Under Environmental Risk Management Authority requirements, All Natural’s laundry powder should have been contained in child-proof packaging, with specific hazard warnings.

After a Department of Labour investigation, All Natural reformulated the laundry powder.

The company went into liquidation two weeks ago, and its former owners could not comment on the investigation.

But the product remained on the shelves, and Consumer NZ is calling for it to be removed.

Testing commissioned by Consumer NZ revealed that the All Natural powder had a pH level of 12.6, which meant it was highly corrosive.

The company’s independent testing gave a pH level of 9.5 to 10.

Since 2007, dishwasher detergents with a higher pH level than 12.5 have been banned. Consumer NZ wanted the same rule to apply to laundry powders.

Consumer NZ’s investigation found an award-winning brand, Ecostore, had a pH of 11.8 in its laundry powder.

The company had now reformulated its powder to meet standards.

Ms Wilson said some brands were trying to cash in on a “green wave” of shoppers who were increasingly aware of a product’s carbon footprint.

The Department of Labour was satisfied with All Natural’s response, and did not demand a recall.

Misleading environmental claims could fall under the Fair Trading Act. Penalties for breaching the act by using misleading information could result in a $60,000 fine for an individual or a $200,000 for a company.

  DIRTY LAUNDRY

  All Natural laundry powder:

1、Not tested by Choose Cruelty Free but carried its logo.

2、Contained sodium metasilicate, which can cause severe burns if swallowed.

3、Had a pH level of 12.6, which meant it was highly corrosive, according to Consumer NZ.

  Ecostore laundry powder:

A pH of 11.8, according to Consumer NZ tests, meaning it was a hazard under ERMA rules and needed child-proof packaging.

The classification of household textiles detergent

July 22, 2010

Washing supplies mainly divided into two types: one is fat (sweet) soap. Second is the synthetic detergents. Synthetic detergents, detergent accounted for about 2/3, liquid detergent accounted for about 1/3, solid synthetic washing supplies are relatively few.

In textile areas, soap, washing powder, powder particles or clear liquid jujube liquid wash the most common agents.

Soap is all sorts of fatty acid sodium, potassium, or by oil and alkali as “, through the whole extraction occur saponification, cooling method, carbonate etc. Soap use some restrictions:

In a hard, washing, may remain apparent effect of dirt. When washing textiles with hard, soap and water of calcium, magnesium, calcium and magnesium ions generation, soap, soap, soap and will make waste color is yellow, textile fabrics harden.

2 is poor universality. Soap use lots of caustic soda, this makes soap alkaline, corrosive, not suitable for washing silk, wool fabric, and some chemical fiber fabrics.

Three is may stimulate the skin. The content of sodium hydroxide soap, soap often high alkaline body resistance increases greatly. Instead, the skin is generally weak environment, soap, wash skin irritant, damage, the soap catharsis close-fitting clothing also stimulates skin, make the person produces tacky, fever of discomfort.

Gypsum Products for Dental Casts

July 19, 2010

The main requirements of model and die materials are dimensional accuracy and adequate mechanical properties. The accuracy of fit of any restoration or appliance constructed outside the mouth depends inter alia on the dimensional accuracy of the replica on which it is constructed. Thus, the dimensional changes which occur during and after the setting of these model materials should, ideally, be minimal in order to produce an accurate model or die. The final fit of the appliance may depend upon a balancing of small expansions or contractions which occur at different stages in its construction and it would be unwise to consider, in isolation, dimensional changes occurring with the model and die materials.

The material should be compatible with all the other materials with which it comes into contact. For example, the set model should easily be removed from the impression without damage to its surface and fracture of teeth. It should give a good colour contrast with the various waxes which are often used to produce wax patterns.

Manipulation and setting characteristics

Plaster and stone powders are mixed with water to produce a workable mix. Hydration of the hemihydrate then occurs producing the gypsum model or die. In the case of the more dense material, dental stone, a ratio of about 0.3 is required to produce a workable mix, whereas for the more porous plaster a higher W/P ratio of 0.55 is required. Factors under the control of the operator are temperature, W/P ratio and mixing time. Surprisingly, temperature variation has little effect on the setting times of gypsum products. This is due to the fact that the setting involves dissolution of one sparing

The casting material for body casting artists

July 15, 2010

Introduction
If you are casting in gypsum either professionally or as a hobbyist you have probably been using plain plaster of Paris or more robust gypsum based cements such Hydrostone, Hydrocal or even the very strong Forton MG casting system.

All these materials have their advantages and specific usage. Like me, you have probably discovered that Forton MG is by far the more robust material and it has indeed become the standard in the body casting and life casting industry allowing artists to make solid and lightweight pieces.

My Formula
I have been using a mixture of PVA glue diluted in water as a sealant for some of my castings. It occurred to me that if I was using this mixture to soak plaster I could obtain a casting material with new properties, always curious to discover better, cheaper, faster ways to do things, I experimented with plaster of Paris and with Hydrocal at different mix ratio but have since settled with Hydrostone.

The pot life of that slurry is just about 5 minutes…this is more than enough to apply a first layer even in a large mold. Mixing it with very cold water will slow down your setting time. A second batch can be mixed and applied immediately. I paint it on the alginate or silicon mold. It is a real pleasure to work with. It is much heavier and stickier than anything else I have been using before.

My resulting castings are consistently of a very high quality with none of these infuriating air bubbles pin holes, fine cracks or, “runneth” that more liquid casting materials are often producing. One of the annoying aspect of Forton when casting it an alginate mold is that it is very runny for almost half an hour, as a result you often get a very thin first layer specially on the vertical part of the mold.. That first layer is very fragile and sometimes crack when applying the second layer, specially when the alginate skin does not adhere perfectly to the mother mold. No such problem with this formula. The mix is much creamier than Forton or plain Hydrostone and you will easily build a thick layer even against vertical walls or overhanging parts and undercuts. I have been able to cast an entire torso in 15 minutes where a similar mold would have taken me over an hour with Forton. Many times, when fiberglass reinforcing is not necessary, I have been able to cast in a single layer.

Demold time is around two hours. Like plaster it will warm as it cures and is fully set when it cools down again. Full strength is achieved after 24 hours and it is fully cured in a few days depending on ambient humidity.

I have not been testing comparative strength for lack of an appropriate test bench and methodology. It can obviously be reinforced with fibreglass to increase resistance to shock like you would normally do with a Forton casting.

Simple test show that it will become as scratch resistant as Forton once it has fully cured.

Cost comparison
This is where my formula really shines and completely outperforms Forton MG.

22kg of Forton FGR powder (modified Hydrocal) and 10kg of VF812 resin will cost me $497 here in New Zealand. This is including the required amount of accelerator but excluding any other agent.

To make an equivalent batch of my formula I only need to buy 22Kg of standard Hydrocal and 5 litres of weather resistant PVA glue ( I am using Selley’s Aquadhere, in the USA a similar product is Weldbond.) There is no need for an accelerant and everything only costs me $146.

Weight for weight my formula is therefore more than 70% cheaper than Forton. Since you will probably use slightly more material than you would with Forton, it is probably only 60% cheaper. This is still a very significant saving. You can report these savings  to your customers and become more competitive or chose to increase your margin, In both cases it will positively affects your bottom line without compromising the quality and robustness of your product.

Other usage.
The astute sculptor will immediately see some other usage for such a material. If you are building mother molds around silicon rubber or urethane mold, this recipe will allow you to build thinner, lighter and stronger mother molds much faster than by using standard plaster of Paris and much cheaper and much quicker than by using Forton.
It is probably not suitable for small size hollow casting as it is too sticky to be slushed out of a mold. It is also too thick to be poured inside a narrow mold. But it can be made runnier by reducing the mix ratio to 1 to 1.5 instead of 1 to 2.

Even though modern PVA glues are often advertised as waterproof or weather resistant, I would still use a properly modified Forton slurry for works designed for permanent outdoor display.

Material handling equipment guide

July 14, 2010

With the growing economy the Material Handling industry is also expecting a boom. As an industry, Material Handling involves various stages like planning, organizing, application, etc. It revolves around the acts of loading, unloading and moving goods within a factory using mechanical devices that are called Material Handling Equipments.

Material handling equipment means equipment, including its supporting structures, auxiliary equipment and rigging devices, used to transport, lift, move or position persons, materials, goods or things. It also includes mobile equipment used to lift, hoist or position persons, but does not include an elevating device that is permanently installed in a building. As per a recent research report conducted in the industry, there are almost 4000 distribution outlets for the Material Handling Equipment in the US.  Material Handling Equipments include lift trucks and inventory handling systems like conveyors, sorters, storage racks, shelving systems and carousels. Lift trucks account for half of these total sales figures. Basically it can be categorized under five main heads, which are, transport equipment, positioning equipment, unit load formation equipment, storage equipment and identification and control equipment.Unit Load Formation Equipment is the equipment used to restrict materials so that they maintain their integrity when handled. If material is self-restraining (e.g. a single part or interlocking parts), then they can be formed into a unit load with no equipment. Storage Equipment is used for holding or buffing materials over a period of time, for example, S/R machines of an AS/RS, storage carousels etc. Identification and Control Equipment consists of those equipments, which are used to collect and communicate the information to be used for coordinating the flow or materials within a facility and between the facility and the suppliers and customers.

In the field of Material handling, ease of maintenance and uptime, both are essential. Together they have an impact on productivity and profits. Maintenance is a poor constituent of “true cost”. It can therefore, often tend to become a hole in the budget. Hence, when choosing equipment due consideration should be given to the cost of maintenance. Certain mishaps can throw the production off gear. Companies must look for a system that requires minimal maintenance. Equipments that are made of durable plastic call for low maintenance. They are non-corrosive and lightweight. At the same time such equipment are impact-resistant, hence require little need for maintenance. Apart from this other unknown mishaps that may put off production, and factors like warranty coverage must also be given due consideration. Identify and go in for equipment that can get repaired quickly and does not require specialized labor. Plastic material handling equipment is easier to maintain and cleaner than metal ones. Water and detergents can easily clean plastic, without causing rust. Most conventional conveyors need lubrication apart from belt tensioning as against some modular systems that are maintenance free.
